Patna, August 3: Union Minister Chirag Paswan Opposes Supreme Court Verdict on SC Quota, Plans Appeal

Patna – In a significant development, Union Minister Chirag Paswan has announced his opposition to the recent Supreme Court ruling that permits states to create sub-groups within the Scheduled Castes (SC) for a portion of the 15 percent reservation quota. Paswan, addressing a press conference here on Saturday, declared that his Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) intends to appeal against the judgment.

Paswan expressed his disagreement with the court’s decision, arguing that it undermines the purpose of the SC quota designed to uplift the socially marginalized communities that have historically faced untouchability. He emphasized that the creation of sub-groups within the SC quota could lead to the exclusion of the most disadvantaged members of the SC community.

“Our party will file an appeal requesting the Supreme Court to review its recent judgment,” Paswan said. “The concept of a ‘creamy layer’ should not apply to the SC quota. Allowing sub-groups within the SC quota will not serve the intended purpose of addressing the needs of those who have been historically oppressed.”

Paswan, whose late father Ram Vilas Paswan was a prominent Dalit leader, expressed surprise that the term ‘untouchability’ was not referenced in the Supreme Court’s judgment. He argued that the majority of SC individuals, regardless of their economic status or educational background, continue to face untouchability.

He further commented on the ongoing debate regarding a caste census, supporting the idea but suggesting that the findings should not be made public. “I believe we should conduct a caste census, but the results should be kept confidential and used solely for policy formulation by the government,” Paswan added.

When asked about his alliance partner JD(U)’s support for the verdict, which the party views as a validation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s policies, including the creation of the “Mahadalit” category, Paswan refrained from commenting.

Key Points:

Opposition to Supreme Court Verdict: Chirag Paswan disagrees with the Supreme Court’s decision allowing sub-groups within the SC quota and plans to appeal.
Concerns Over Untouchability: Paswan argues that the decision disregards the ongoing issue of untouchability faced by many SC individuals.
Caste Census Debate: While supporting a caste census, Paswan advocates for keeping the findings confidential for government use only.
The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is expected to take further legal action, and the appeal could have significant implications for the reservation policies and social justice initiatives in India.
